Problem
While the lead designer focused on creating a form that responded to the steep and complex terrain, my primary responsibility during the rendering phase was to identify materials that would both support the architectural vision and integrate seamlessly with the natural environment. This involved conducting in-depth material research to find finishes that were not only visually cohesive with the landscape but also low-maintenance, energy-efficient, and appropriate for the region’s climate.
Construction Materials
Facade Cladding: Fiber cement panels and cast-in-place concrete give the exterior a modern, seamless look while offering durability and insulation. Wood Accents: Vertical slats of thermally treated wood add warmth and contrast, helping the design blend with the natural landscape. Windows & Glazing: Large, double-glazed aluminum windows bring in natural light and frame key views, with sleek dark frames that enhance energy efficiency. Roofing: Sloped roofs use asphalt shingles for durability, while flat areas are finished with a TPO membrane for drainage and insulation. Railings: Slim, powder-coated steel railings maintain safety without blocking views. Wood cap rails add a warmer, tactile element. Hardscape & Driveway: Gravel paths and concrete retaining walls manage water flow and support the site’s steep terrain with minimal disruption.
